Plus-sized heroines in the Dragon's Den
When I saw two plus-sized women in formal wear heading down the corridor to the Dragon’s Den, I had to fight the urge to change the channel. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see curvaceous women on my favourite CBC show*, I was simply terrified someone (Kevin) would make fun of them.

Make fun of one of us and you make fun of all of us, at least that’s how it feels. It’s a feeling that can ruin a TV show or a movie in a heartbeat.

I voiced my fear.

“Don’t worry,” said my boyfriend. “Arlene won’t let them get away with crap.”

It was the right thing to say. As much as I swoon over Brett Wilson, Arlene Dickinson is one of the main reasons I tune in every week. Strong, smart, and with hair that I would kill for, Arlene is by far my favourite. I could have faith in Arlene.

The segment went amazingly well. Cindy Davington and Rina Rovinelli entered the den looking for an investment in Maximum Woman, a plus-sized clothing line and retail store specializing in formal wear for women size 14-32. No one mocked them and no one said they were crazy. Kevin made one crack about their “gigantic” customer base and was rewarded with a look from Arlene that would have sent most sane men scampering.

Jim and Brett – despite being worried that they didn’t know enough about that industry – joined with Arlene in offering them $250,000 for 50% of the company (a higher share than they had initially offered up). Jim’s main reason in wanting to invest seemed to be the women themselves, their commitment, knowledge, and moxie (my words). Three dragons had an offer on the table – something few of the entrepreneurs venturing the show would decline – but Cindy and Rina surprised and impressed everyone by turning the dragon down. Giving away a 50% stake in the company they had built from the ground up was just too high a price to pay. While the $250,000 would help, they had enough faith in themselves to walk away.

They may not have walked away with what they had come for but Cindy and Rina were an inspiration to many a fat girl watching
